The best month to visit Copenhagen

October, if the evening matters to you; May or June, if the city matters more than the dark. Those are two different trips and the honest answer depends on which one you are taking. January and February

Cold and dark, in that order. January averages 1.4 °C with about 1.5 hours of sunshine a day, and cold waves reach fifteen or sixteen below. Darkness is not the problem in midwinter; on 21 December there are only 7 hrs 6 min of daylight in the entire day. Tivoli’s Christmas season runs to 3 January and then the gardens close until spring. Come for the museums and the light indoors, and treat an outdoor walk as a decision you make in proper boots.

March and April

The city reopens. Tivoli’s summer season starts on 7 April. Evenings are lengthening fast, which means the useful dark is disappearing, and by late April an eight o’clock walk is not a night walk. Fewer visitors than May onwards, and the streets are pleasant to be on.

May and June

The best weeks to be in Copenhagen and the worst to book a ghost walk. Light from before five in the morning until nearly ten at night; on 21 June, 17 hrs 32 min of it, with nautical twilight to about 10:58 pm. Anna from Sweden took the walk on 31 May and called it exciting, so the walk itself holds up in daylight. It just is not dark, and no operator can change that. July and August

Warmest, at about 18 °C on average, and busiest. Helen from Australia took the ghost walk on 12 July and called her guide a gifted story-teller, which is the fair summary of a summer booking: a good walk, in the light. August is the wettest month of the year at about 80 mm, and by the end of it the evenings have started coming back.

September

The month people underrate. The crowds thin, the air sharpens, and by the end of the month sunset has come back to a sensible hour. Tivoli’s summer season closes on 20 September and the Halloween season opens on 2 October, so the very end of September falls in a gap.

October, the answer

Sunset on 1 October is 6:47 pm; on the fifteenth, 6:12 pm; the clocks go back and on the twenty-fifth it is 4:48 pm; on the thirty-first, 4:35 pm. That is 2 hrs 13 min of daylight gone in a month, which is the fastest the year moves here. Real dark, mild air, and the city in its Halloween season with two haunted houses running inside Tivoli from 2 October. If you are choosing a month for the evening rather than the afternoon, this is it. Book early, because the guided walk’s October dates are the ones that disappear.

November and December

Dark from the middle of the afternoon and cold with it. Tivoli’s Christmas season runs 13 November to 3 January and pulls most of the visitors; the gardens took 4.25 million visitors across 2024. A four o’clock walk in December is a night walk. Whether that is atmospheric or simply cold depends entirely on your coat.

Two dates do more work than any weather forecast. The clocks go back on 25 October, which drops sunset from 6:12 pm in mid-month to 4:48 pm overnight. Picking a month and then a walk

If the month is October, book the guided ghost walk first and plan the rest of the trip round the evening you get. If the month is June or July, book a self-guided hunt or the daytime walk after the six giants and enjoy the light instead of fighting it.
