Copenhagen ghost walks in English

Walks that run in English
One guided ghost walk, two self-guided murder-mystery hunts and one four-hour daytime walk. That is the complete English-language list. The two remaining walks — the nightman’s tour and the folk legends — are guided in Danish only, with no English version. Copenhagen is not a city with a deep English-language ghost-tour market, and no page here is going to pretend otherwise.

The four you can take

Guided, in English, after dark: one. The guided ghost walk runs an hour and a half from Nytorv to Kongens Nytorv with a guide in a black cloak and a lantern. It holds 5.0 across 14 verified reviews, and its weakness is the calendar rather than the content — one reviewer found “only one available for the whole month”.

Self-guided, in English or Danish: two. The Round Tower hunt is set in 1899 and runs from Rundetårn through the old core. The Amalienborg hunt takes a nineteenth-century murder round the harbour quarter and stays valid for 93 days. Both are paper-and-pen, both need at least two people, and both work perfectly well in English.

Guided, in English, in daylight: one. The six forgotten giants is four hours out of the city with a guide, private transport, coffee and a meal, hunting six wooden trolls by Thomas Dambo. It carries 138 reviews at 5.0 and has nothing to do with ghosts.

The two you cannot

The nightman’s tour runs 75 minutes in Danish on the natmænd — the people who emptied the latrines, cleared the carcasses and assisted the executioner, and were counted uærlige, dishonourable, for it. The folk legends walk runs 90 minutes in Danish on the Devil in Laksegade, a widow buried alive and a bride whose anger darkened the sun. They are the two most interesting subjects on offer in this city and there is no English version of either. If somebody in your party reads Danish, that changes your plan.

What you are not missing, and what you are

The Laksegade material is not lost to English speakers: a reviewer of the English ghost walk singled out “the Salmon Street episode” as the best part of it, so the story is on the English walk too. What the Danish walks have is the room to go deeper into one subject for an hour and a half. The English walk is a general ghost walk, and a good one.

English is not a problem in Copenhagen generally — the problem here is the size of the market, not the language. One guided ghost walk means one guide, one schedule and one evening a week rather than a choice of operators. Plan around that and the city delivers. The full guide covers the history the walks draw on.

If you read Danish, book a Danish walk. The natmænd were a category, not a curiosity: counted uærlige because the work involved filth and carrion, barred from marrying into respectable families, excluded from community life, and left to build a parallel society with its own rules and its own language. Seventy-five minutes on that is worth more than ninety on ghosts in general. Who they were.

Book the English walk

Dates for the guided ghost walk are below, and they are the whole constraint. If nothing fits, the two hunts start when you like. The decision page sorts all six by situation, and the groups page covers party sizes.

Those dates don’t work?

The guided ghost walk runs on set evenings and sells out early in October. Browse what else is bookable in Copenhagen — the self-guided murder mysteries you can start whenever you like, and the daytime walks — and pick a date that suits you, with instant confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Are there ghost tours in Copenhagen in English?

One guided ghost walk, plus two self-guided murder-mystery hunts that work in English. The nightman’s walk and the folk-legends walk are Danish only: the English walk.

Why is there only one English ghost walk?

Copenhagen does not market itself as haunted, and the one operator running guided ghost walks in English is a small one with limited dates. That is the honest shape of the market: what that means for your booking.

Do the murder-mystery hunts work in English?

Yes, both run in English or Danish, and both are paper-and-pen rather than app-based: guided or self-guided.

Is anything else in English?

The four-hour six giants walk, in daylight, outside the city. It is not a ghost tour but it is the best-reviewed thing here: the giants.

Should I learn what I am missing on the Danish walks?

The Laksegade story comes up on the English walk too. What the Danish walks add is depth on one subject: the folk legends and the nightman’s tour.
