The Ghost Cat of Rosenborg

What the story says

A guard was killed in a shooting accident. His cat stayed. Soldiers on night duty at Rosenborg are said to see it, and the sight is said to unsettle them. That is the whole of it, and it is told as a ghost story rather than reported as an event, which is worth saying plainly on a site that also publishes death tolls with sources behind them.

The other palace

The same source carries a second one: Frederiksberg Palace is said to be haunted by King Frederik VI in the form of a small dog. Two royal buildings, two animals, no documentation for either. Danish palace ghosts run to the domestic rather than the gothic, which is its own kind of national characteristic.

What is documented instead

If you want the parts of Copenhagen's dark history that come with dates, they are next door. The first Christiansborg burned on 26 February 1794 from an overheated stove; the second burned in 1884. Kastellet held Struensee before his execution and the explorer John Norcross for thirty-two years, sixteen of them in a wooden cage. A permanent scaffold stood on Nytorv from 1627 to 1761.
