The guided ghost walk, by contrast, is a storytelling walk with no effects at all, and the two are worth keeping separate in your head before you book either.

What Tivoli is

Tivoli Gardens opened on 15 August 1843 and is the second-oldest continuously operating amusement park in the world, after Dyrehavsbakken north of the city. It took 4.25 million visitors in 2024. It sits in the middle of Copenhagen, a short walk from the central station, and it runs in seasons rather than all year: summer from 7 April to 20 September, Halloween from 2 October to 1 November, and Christmas from 13 November to 3 January.

The Halloween season is the gardens decorated, lit and given over to the theme for a month, with two haunted houses among the attractions. Tivoli’s own warning about them is worth taking at face value: not for the faint of heart, and not for young children.

How that differs from a ghost walk

Completely. A haunted house is designed to make you jump; that is the product and Tivoli builds it deliberately. The guided ghost walk is ninety minutes outdoors with a guide in a black cloak carrying a lantern, and the operator states in writing that there are no special effects nor elaborate props. Nobody leaps out. What you get instead is the ground: Nytorv, which carried a permanent execution scaffold from 1627 until 1761, the court house C.F. Hansen built between 1803 and 1815 with the prisoner arch overhead, and Laksegade, where windows shattered in September 1826 and the police statement of the fifteenth confirmed they had been broken from the outside and called the rest fabrication.

Do not try to do both in one evening. Tivoli is a long visit and the gardens are at their best when you are not watching the clock, and the ghost walk runs to a fixed start from a meeting point on the other side of the old city. Put them on separate days — and if you only have one free evening in October, the walk is the one that is hard to rebook.

If you are here outside the Halloween season

There are no haunted houses. The summer season, 7 April to 20 September, is the gardens as an ordinary amusement park, and the Christmas season from 13 November to 3 January is lights and markets. So a visitor arriving in July looking for something frightening in Copenhagen will not find it at Tivoli, and will not find it on the ghost walk either, since on 21 June the sun does not set until 9:57 pm. What to book instead, or as well

The old city is outdoors and free to walk through at any hour. If you want a reason to be in it after dark, the two self-guided murder mystery hunts start whenever you like and want a party of at least two, and the guided walk is the one with a human being attached. Families should read the children page first, because the ghost walk does not admit under sevens and Tivoli says the haunted houses are not for young children either.

The widget will tell you one thing faster than any page can: the guided walk runs on set evenings and the calendar is thin. A reviewer from the United Kingdom who enjoyed the walk in August 2026 still put the same complaint in writing — “the lack of choice for dates.. only one available for the whole month”. Look at the dates before you build an evening around it. The English-language picture is narrower than most capitals.
