Groups, families and party sizes

Groups, families and party sizes
The numbers that actually constrain a group here are small and specific. Both murder-mystery hunts need a minimum of two people and recommend groups of two to four. The guided ghost walk does not admit under-7s. The six giants walk does not admit under-12s. Nothing on this site is sold as a private charter, and this page is not going to invent one — what it can tell you is how each product behaves when you turn up with six people instead of two.

Small groups: two to four

This is the size the two hunts are built for. The Round Tower case and the Amalienborg case both set the minimum at two and recommend two to four, and the recommendation is about the work rather than the walking: one set of papers, one pen, one argument. Past four, somebody is walking at the back holding nothing.

A group of this size is also the easiest to fit onto the guided walk, whose real constraint is dates rather than capacity. Book the evening first and put the hunt on a spare afternoon.

Bigger parties: five and up

For a hunt, the answer is in the recommended size. A party of eight is two teams of four, buying two sets and racing each other; a party of six is two threes. That is the structure the product implies, and it turns a puzzle that would bore half the group into a competition that does not.

For the guided walks, a group is simply a group: the ghost walk is ninety minutes on foot and the nightman’s and folk-legends walks are 75 and 90 minutes respectively. Michelle, from Australia, took the giants walk with a party of five — “We had 5 of us and all had a great time laughing and finding the Giants” — which is the only first-hand account on the record here of a group larger than four on any of these products.

Families

The age limits do most of the deciding. The guided ghost walk is not suitable for children under 7. The six giants walk does not take under-12s, which surprises people, because a walk in the woods looking for wooden trolls sounds like the family option and is not. Neither hunt states an age limit, so with children in between those two numbers a hunt is usually where a family lands: it goes at your pace, it stops for lunch, and a child can be handed a clue and made responsible for it. The full children page goes through it properly.

One practical thing about families and darkness: in October the sun is down by 6:12 pm in the middle of the month and 4:35 pm at the end of it, which means a genuinely dark walk can still finish before a reasonable bedtime. In June the same walk ends in broad daylight. The sunset tables.

Stag and hen parties, honestly

The guided ghost walk is storytelling with no props and no effects, in a group with other paying strangers, for ninety minutes. A loud party of twelve will ruin it for everyone including themselves. The hunts are the better fit for that kind of group: split into teams, set a finish point, and let the competition do the work. Nothing on this site is sold as a private booking for one party, so a group that wants exclusivity does not have an obvious product here, and saying so is more use than pretending.

What works

  • Two to four is a stated recommendation, so you are not guessing at the right size
  • A large party can run the hunts as competing teams with no coordination problem
  • The guided walks take individuals, so odd numbers are never a problem
  • The hunts start whenever you like, which is easier to organise for eight people than a fixed evening
  • The giants walk includes transport and a meal, which removes two decisions for a group

Worth knowing

  • No private-charter product is listed for any of these walks
  • Under-7s cannot take the guided ghost walk; under-12s cannot take the giants walk
  • Neither hunt can be booked by one person
  • The guided walk’s dates are thin, which is worse when you need to align several diaries
  • A hunt with more than four in a team leaves people with nothing to do
Organising several people

Book the guided evening first, then build the group around it. Every other product on this site can be moved: the hunts have no fixed start, the Amalienborg case is valid 93 days, and the giants run in daylight. The guided walk is the only one where the date has to exist before your plan does. The decision page.

Check dates for the group

Live availability for the guided ghost walk is below — check it before you promise anything to anyone. How long each walk takes helps with fitting several people’s days together, and the access page covers cobbles and standing, which matters more in a mixed-age group than anything else on this page.

Those dates don’t work?

The guided ghost walk runs on set evenings and sells out early in October. Browse what else is bookable in Copenhagen — the self-guided murder mysteries you can start whenever you like, and the daytime walks — and pick a date that suits you, with instant confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum group size for a murder-mystery hunt?

Two people, with two to four recommended. A solo traveller cannot book one and should take the guided ghost walk instead.

Can we book a private ghost tour for our group?

No private-charter version of these walks is listed, so a group books the ordinary walk like anyone else. A large party is better served by running the self-guided hunts as competing teams.

What are the age limits?

Under-7s cannot take the guided ghost walk and under-12s cannot take the six giants walk. Neither hunt states a limit: children on these walks.

We are eight people. What should we do?

Two teams of four on a hunt, or the guided walk together if the date exists. Team size is the part that matters: how a hunt works.

Is a ghost walk a good stag or hen activity?

Only for a quiet one. It is ninety minutes of storytelling with no props, shared with other guests. A hunt run as a competition suits a loud group far better: which walk to choose.
