Why Is 3am Scary?

Nothing measurable happens at three in the morning. The hour has a reputation because of culture and because of how bodies behave in the middle of the night: it is dark, it is quiet, there is nobody to check a thought against, and people who wake then are usually waking out of deep sleep into a room with no information in it. In Copenhagen the reputation runs into a local problem, which is that in June it is not dark at three in the morning at all.

The honest answer

There is no clock-based mechanism. Three in the morning is frightening for the same reasons any deep-night hour is frightening: you are alone, the light is gone, the noise that normally fills a city has stopped, and a mind waking out of sleep is not at its most sceptical. Cultures attach names and meanings to the small hours, and those names get passed on. That is the whole of it, and this site is not going to pad it out with research it cannot cite.

Why the hour does not work here

Copenhagen is far enough north that the night barely happens in summer. On 21 June the sun rises at 4:25 am and sets at 9:57 pm, giving about seventeen and a half hours of daylight, and nautical twilight does not end until roughly 10:58 pm. Three in the morning in June is a pale hour with light already coming back into the sky. On 21 December, by contrast, the city gets 7 hours 6 minutes of daylight and 3am is as dark as anyone could want.

What that means for a ghost walk

It means the scary hour in Copenhagen is not an hour at all, it is a season. A summer evening walk happens in broad daylight; by 31 October the sun is down at 4:35 pm and an evening walk is genuinely dark. That single fact decides more about the experience than anything the guide says, and it is set out month by month on when it actually gets dark and the best month to visit.

The English guided walk is storytelling with a lantern and a black cloak, no special effects and no elaborate props, an hour and a half from Nytorv: what to expect.
